Gumtree Monday evening revealed its eleven Pre-Owned Car Awards winners at a glittering function in Johannesburg, where Volkswagen and Mazda starred, while Toyota, Audi and Jaguar also got a nose in.

The 11 Gumtree Pre-Owned Car Awards Winners were chosen out of 55 Finalists, with those five cars per class already all winners in their own right as they represent the cars that best retain their new value of all category rivals according to Unitrans pre-owned car sales data.

Those 55 two-year old 2016 model cars were then presented to Gumtree’s panel of 11 expert judges, with each car submitted to an intense evaluation and those scores then audited, with winner in each category announced Monday evening. 

Gumtree Pre-Owned Car Awards judge, Auto Bakkie Race editor Michele Lupini was impressed by the quality and depth of the finalists in each class, most of which categories were hard fought. “I think the winners this year are a very good choice,” Lupini explained. “Our own scoring was pretty close – we had seven of the eleven winners right and the rest were a close second best in our scoring, so the judging seemed quite consistent. 

“Volkswagen was the star of the show – they had five winners on the night and dominated the more price-sensitive classes. “Were we to have chosen one overall winner however, that would likely have been the Mazda CX-3 – not only is it the car that has the best resale value as a percentage of its original selling price off all 55 finalists, but it was the only car of all to earn a unanimous vote with all 11 judges scoring the CX-3 in its class.”
