Hilux Dakar

Something special with a new nose

Toyota is famous for dolling up the Hilux with special editions to boost sales throughout the bakkie’s life with its Legend series every few years, among others, but this latest Dakar version is quite different in that it actually ushers in a fresh new look for SA’s favourite new vehicle.

We still await official press info on the new Dakar, but the limited edition is now live on the Toyota SA website and we understand its new grille and bumper design, among other tweaks, will form the basis of a general new look across the range. The new look in line with Toyota’s often quite controversial brand image, is limited to the Dakar edition, while Raider and SRX models continue with the existing frontal design for now.

Dakar Hiluxes Edition 2018 also gets gloss black wing mirrors and door handles as well as Dakar logos and there’s a bold Inferno Orange paint option, while the cabin gets partial leather and gloss black trim and a standard satnav to go with the regular Hilux touchscreen audio with reverse camera, auto climate and cruise controls, seven airbags, stability, traction and trailer controls on both 130kW 450Nm 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesels and 175kW 376Nm 4-litre V6 petrol bakkies at R19K on GD6 models and R11K on the V6s.
