BMW X3

SA-built X3 now on the road

It’s all change at BMW’s Rosslyn plant with the last of a long line of BMW 3 Series models coming off the line after 35 years, to make way for new X3 production and 76 000 units planned out of Pretoria to satisfy global demand.

BMW launched its mid-size X3 Sports Activity Vehicle in 2003 resulting in more than 1.5 million new units internationally and this, its third-generation mid-range mild off-roader comes with a 205mm ride height, 500mm fording ability and respective 25 and 22.6-degree approach and departure angles should you need them, but it certainly will find favour in South Africa.

Being a BMW, it’s no surprise that road holding and handling are high-points – as is a positive steering feel and rather firm ride without discomfort and xDrive is also in place to constantly split and vary power between the four wheels for top crossover experiences.

There is a downside however – X3’s driver assist and lane control interference more than hindered and impeded an otherwise fine and pleasurable driving experience on paved roads. I turned them off after a few confusing and anxious moments when touching the white solid or broken road markings…

X3 30d’s 140kW and 400Nm is the same as its main rival Audi Q5 2.0TDi quattro, the BMW setting you back R698K compared to the R687 506 of the imported Q5. As an aside, the X3 delivers its 140kW at 4000rpm and 400Nm at 1750rpm and the maximum revs before the limiter intervened, was around 4300rpm during testing.

Sportier looking now and in fact acting the part too, the X3 is well priced with a generously appointed interior stacked with improved and updated materials. Other upsides include three-zone automatic climate control, automatic tailgate, satellite navigation, smart leather seats and 18” alloy wheels.
