Tough enough to tame India

One of the dark horses in Best Bakkie 2019, Mahindra’s much-improved Pik Up 2.2CRDe Double Cab 4x4 S10 gets refreshed body styling, a new six speed transmission, increased 103kW turbodiesel power and impressive towing capacity of 2500kg. In fact it’s a bit of an eye-opener.

Other enhancements include new attractive interior, more aggressive front-end styling where the grille with new headlights, bonnet and fog lamps bring a far more contemporary look to the Indian warrior. Those glossy black and chrome finishes, more prominent Mahindra badge and a lower air intake reshaped for a stronger visual appeal certainly transform the beast to deliver a much more contemporary attitude.

Add new headlights with a curved LED daytime running light signature, bolder fog lamps in restyled apertures The 16-inch alloy wheels add to the styling impact.

The upholstery and the large 6” full colour touch screen display located in the centre console in the comprehensively equipped cabin including ABS, EBD, Dual airbags, crash protection crumple zones and collapsible steering column and static bending headlamp technology for night driving.

Powering Pik Up has an updated 2.2- litre four-cylinder mHawk turbodiesel engine with variable geometry turbocharger, with peak torque of 320Nm churned out from 1600 to2800rpm and turning a six-speed manual gearbox driving the a 4x4 transmission with low range and backed by a mechanical locking rear differential.

The new Mahindra Pik-Up double cab lacks nothing in performance terms either for its price with its 11.29-sec 0-100km/h dash, the 80-120km/h in an impressive 8.80 sec with an 8l/100km fuel consumption -- not to mention the that it can tote a full tonne and capable of pulling a handy two-and-a-half-ton trailer.

And then it is of course rugged enough to tame India too at a price to really make the budget-conscious really smile. – Mario Lupini
