Second generation mini Range has big shoes to fill

Land Rover has revealed its all-new tech-rich second-edition Range Rover Evoque to take on cousin Jaguar E-pace, BMW’s X2, the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40. The newcomer has big shoes to fill — the first edition 2011 Evoque proved a significant and unexpected success, selling 800 000 units in seven years and was still selling strongly when production ended earlier this year.

So it’s not surprising that the new one maintains an eerie similarity to the much-loved original, but it is all-new and bristles with new technology, sits on a new, more space-efficient platform designed for electrification era and benefits new hybrid technology in most models from launch. Add enhanced quality and materials and current level pricing.

The completely new body keeps a clear Evoque look with large front wheel arches, prominent rear haunches, a radically rising waistline and descending roof but it gets even slimmer LED headlights, and wraparound side and tail-lights and the recessed door handles from Vela, while tighter panel gaps, and up to 21-inch wheels complete an enticing package.

New Evoque rides on all-new 13% stiffer transverse-engined 'mixed-material 'Premium Transverse  Architecture said to improve refinement and handling at the same length as the original but on a 20mm longer wheelbase for extra cabin space and rear cabin leg room, while larger rear doors improve access, and there’s 10% more boot space too. The three-door Evoque has been discontinued.

MacPherson strut front suspension features fluid-filled Hydrobushes for better road isolation, while Velar’s Integral Link more refined and space saving set-up does duty at the back, while most models get adaptive shock absorbersfor best performance in all road conditions.

Powered by JLR’s petrol and diesel 2-litre Ingenium engines, most Evoques are all-wheel driven except for a 110kW P150 FWD manual model; while the  220kW P300 turbo petrol engine turns the familiar nine-speed ZF automatic gearbox with double the power.
