South Africans star home and away

The third round of the 2019 TRP Distributors SA Motocross Championship delivered a splendid day’s racing in Bloemfontein in on Saturday to see most class championships tighten up. KTM riders, Tristan Purdon took MX1 and Joshua Mlimi MX2, while Ian Topliss (Yamaha) took MX3 and Tyla Raaf (Husqvarna) took the ladies’ class. In the school kid classes, Husqvarna riders Dalton Venter took High School and Jordan van Wyk 65cc victory, while KTM trio Emmanuel Bako took 85cc honours, Leonard du Toit Pro Mini and Ethan Williamson the baby 50cc prize.

SA champion Nick Adcock swapped cars to join Fritz Kleynhans and James Forbes' Ligier-Honda and dodge the problems that beset many of their rivals to win the Nelson Mandela Bay 500 at Port Elizabeth’s Aldo Scribante Race track. In a dramatic race, the winning trio came home 6 laps clear of GT winners Charl and Harry Arangies' Lamborghini with Andrew Culbert and Sun Moodley Porsche another 5 laps behind.

The Aldo Scribante support bill also delivered thrills as Audi S5-mounted Scribante grandsons Aldo beat Silvio to two narrow EP Modified Saloon wins as Deon Slabbert (Polo) took Class B, Quinsley Sale Class X, George van Baalen (Polo) Class C and Stephan Aucamp (BMW), Daniel Bright (Golf) and Fanie Aucamp (Jetta) Classes D, E and F. Gavin Gorman’s Nardini and Gordon Nicholson (GT-R) were best of the locals in the two EP Sportscar races, Rudolf de Vos thundered to both Historic wins in his Chevy Can Am and Stuart Cornforth (Mini) and Justin Seale (350Z) shared Street Car wins.

On two wheels Jessica Howden (Yamaha R3) put one over the lads to beat Chad Bilsbury (Honda 400) and Gerrie Havenga (Yamaha R6) to the Clubmans bike win, while Jared Schultz (Yamaha R6) took overall Superbike honours from Brandon Staffen (Kawasaki ZX6), Travis Naude (ZX10) and Ricardo Otto (R6).

South African racers once again enjoyed a positive weekend overseas. In the Donington British Superbike races, Kade Verwey took his Kawasaki to third in the opening Junior Supersport race before winning race 2, while brother Luke ended 17th and sixth. Philip Atkinson rode to a couple of thirds the Ducati Cup, while Suzuki-mounted Jordan Weaving took 15th and Bjorn Estment 23rd in the opening Superstock 1000 race, before they ended 14th and 15th in race 2 and Atkinson was 13th in the final after Estment retired.

Young Ruche Moodley meantime made a tough debut in Spanish Moto 4, stalling on  the start line and starting from pit lane to end  P31, while over in Monte Carlo, SA lad Saul Hack ended 15th on his Porsche Supercup debut in the principality and across the pond, Cam Petersen took a weekend off his US Supersport duty and a trip out of his comfort zone to race in the Springfield dirt oval TT. Bucket list stuff.
