McLaren reveals its 400km/h flagship

Meet McLaren’s latest hypercar — the all-new 400km/h Speedtail is set to be a true driver’s car — quicker even than its legendary spiritual predecessor, the 390km/h F1 that also had a similar three-seat cockpit with a central driving position.

Also like F1, only 106 Speedtails will be built at around R45-million a pop, while McLaren has no intention to beat the Koenigsegg Agera RS’ record 444km/h, claiming its 400km/h brings a balance between comfort and tyre capability in a usable GT machine. Powered by a still secret 750kW petrol-electric hybrid powertrain that will drive the rear wheels, Speedtail will be built around a bespoke carbonfibre monocoque at a dry weight of 1430kg.

The quickest-accelerating McLaren yet, Speedtail will get to 300km/h in 12.8 seconds, while top speed will be achieved in Velocity mode, which will optimise the powertrain to maximum electric power and lower the car’s ride height by 35mm. Speedtail is streamlined to minimise drag for maximum aerodynamic efficiency with its carbonfibre body 549mm longer than the P1.

The body has minimised shutlines and gaps and the giant rear clamshell has two active ailerons automatically raised and lowered to ensure high stability while minimising drag, while a number of vents help direct air over, through and under the car, along with a lengthy rear diffuser and flat underfloor.
