‘30s racers return to East London this weekend

East London’s Grand Prix Circuit will quite literally experience a time warp this weekend, when the sights, sounds and aromas of the very grand prix cars that raced there in the 1930s return to action, 80 years down the line.

Seventeen priceless competing grand prix machines will include the Maserati 8CM that won the inaugural South African Grand Prix in 1934, an Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 and a gang of ERAs, one of which won the ’37 SA Grand Prix, which will return to race action chased as they always were by MGs, Rileys, Austin Seven Specials, Aston Martin Ulsters, a Bugatti Type 35, Singer Le Mans and Plymouth Special.

Off track, Camilla Bowater, daughter of Whitney Straight will be reunited with her father’s ’34 race-winning Maserati and three generations of East London's racing Scheckters will be among the dignitaries out to celebrate their ancestors’ on track antics, while a full program of historic single seaters, sports, GT and saloon cars will keep fans happy all weekend.
