Is this X4 a SUV? Or is it a sportscar?

To petrol heads BMWs with the letter ‘M’ in the model designation convey a sense of ‘magical’ supremacy - the X4 M40i for instance, definitely adds to the dream. Though it represents more than one world, it still fits neatly into the SUV sector as a serious contender.

The secret begins with the M Performance TwinPower Turbo petrol straight-six engine with that superior power build-up and fabulous sporty sound. To that end, the double VANOS, Valvetronic, High Precision Injection and TwinScroll turbocharged engine delivers a heady 260kW and 500Nm.

Acceleration from zero to 100km/h on the Highveld of 5.1 seconds more than impresses in everyday driving mode, this coupled with staggering pull-off qualities and requiring little use of the other modes. However, the silky 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission does remind you of its ‘M’ links.

OK, it does not compare fully with its ‘M’ car brethren - but exciting it definitely is. Road holding is not top-notch but considering its size, road clearance of the 10mm lowered M Sport suspension still delivers agile handling for what basically is still an SUV. However it does feature shorter suspension springs and tighter damper settings as well as harder stabilisers. A downside is the comfortable seating positions that are a tad high for what in effect is a true supercar.     

As an M, the variable sports steering feel may not be prime, but is still good enough. What is top-notch, is braking. Just peek at the M Sport brake setup and you get the message. Although the front design of the M140i A/T inspires the grill is a rather tame, however the alloy wheels in Jet Black and the purposeful exhaust pipes in black chrome ad to the performance mix. 

Impressive features in the interior include M Sport seats and M Leather steering wheel, with other exclusive details such as M Performance door sill finishes and M Performance specific instruments enhancing the sporty ambience.
