Mercedes-Benz GLE

All new GLE better in every respect

Mercedes-Benz today lit the fuse for an explosion of SUV new launches to South Africa with the introduction of the all-new fourth-generation GLE in Pretoria. The first of a literal avalanche of new sport utility product ranging from the GLA to the GLS Maybach and with most of it coming in the next two years, Merc’s entire 4x4 range will soon be replaced and if today was anything to go by, it’s going to be good!

GLE started life over twenty years ago with the ML — the car that changed 4x4s for good. Originally developed to replace the G Wagen, Merc soon realised how different the two vehicles' owner profiles were between the planned successor and the original and ML was born its own car. Of course, G lives on as very much the icon of the Merc 4x4 portfolio, which literally exploded as Benz pioneered that SUV potential and now there’s a Merc Sportute, quite literally for everyone.

ML morphed into GLE a generation back as it became necessary to differentiate all its SUVs by the same nomenclature as its sedans and now this E-Class sized wagon starts the next generation…

Designed to deliver record low aerodynamic drag and riding on optional Active Body Control suspension with 48 volt electrics and best Mercedes safety, new GLE is longer, wider and lower and rides on a considerably longer wheelbase to deliver a bigger, more spacious and more comfortable cabin and it now comes as a 7-seater too. Luggage capacity is up to 825 litres behind the rear seats and 2055 litres when the 40:20:40 split second seat row is folded down

Packing latest generation artificial intelligence MBUX infotainment with a stunning brilliant large screen cockpit comprising 12.3-inch and 31.2 cm screens, optional Interior Assist also allows intuitive gesture control over and above voice, touch and latest generation steering controls, while mood lighting brings a fine ambiance too.

GLE is available in the four-cylinder 180kW 500Nm GLE 300 d and a splendid V6 pair of the 243kW 700Nm 400 d V6 and 270kW 500M EQ Boost 450 with an additional 250Nm electric hybrid boost on demand. All get 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearboxes auto and 4Matic all wheel drive.

Our short time with GLE today proved its extreme versatility with E-Class luxury, a splendid ride in a serene and silent cabin, while the car certainly delivers on its promise of great road agility and superior 4x4 ability in one sublime package… — Michele Lupini
