Mercedes-Benz CLA

Second generation CLA even better

Launched alongside the all-new A-Class sedan, Mercedes-Benz' second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA also hits South African streets this week to offer an even wider selection to first-time Mercedes sedan owners and those looking for a full-house buy-down option too.

CLA shares much of its genes with the new A-Class sedan and hatchback and has grown in length width and wheelbase, but it retains its sleeker, lower stance, pillarless windows and subtly more aggressive demeanour to its softer sedan sibling.

CLA is available in the same base engine as the A sedan in a 120kW 250Nm 1.3-litre turbo petrol A200 good for an oddly slightly tardier 8.2-second 0-100km/h dash and 229km/h top end, while returning 5.5l/100km fuel economy. The second engine is a 144kW 400Nm 2-litre turbodiesel in the CLA 220d that’s good for 7.1-seconds 0-100km/, 244km/h and 4.4l/100km. Both engines turn an 8-speed autobox and drive the front wheels.

Offering a similar range and options to the new A-Class sedan, with which it shares much of its components, the all-new CLA is however a completely different car to drive. You notice the difference the moment you settle into its sportier pews and it drives far sportier too.

So not only is the CLA sharper looking than iots more family kin, but oit is sporter in every respect too — all of which broadens the choices of the traditional Mercedes-Benz owner looking for the expected brand values at a far more attainable price point... - Michele Lupini
