Ford Figo Freestyle

Ford adds an all-road baby

Ford SA has expanded its already handy utility vehicle range with today’s launch of the all-new Figo Freestyle at the entry level – what they call a sub-B segment compact utility vehicle based on the popular Figo hatchback.

Joining the EcoSport, Kuga and Everest on the range, Freestyle is basically a Figo on stilts, which stance Ford calls robust, with increased ground clearance and a commanding driving position ideally suited to city driving through the week and weekend countryside escapes.

In effect, Figo Freestyle is well equipped for adventure as it meets growing demand from younger buyers for a more compact and affordable car than traditional compact SUV offerings. To that end, Freestyle brings bigger double-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels framed by bold black arches and integrated skid plates, while standard roof rails allow easy fitment of a bicycle, canoe or other adventure kit racks to further enhance its broad ability.

Eye-catching styling is backed up by a sophisticated two-tone cabin featuring latest Ford tech — Freestyle comes in base model Trend or richly appointed Titanium packages powered by Ford’s impressive, lively and elastic 91kW 150Nm1.5-litre three-pot naturally aspirated Ti-VCT engine driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Ride height is up 16mm from the regular Figo to 190mm and here are five colour choices, including a striking new Canyon Ridge unique to Freestyle

A cool, connected and capable package, Freestyle Trend comes with Ford’s Device Dock boasting Bluetooth, USB and Aux connectivity and a handy smartphone receptacle. Titanium adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity with voice activation to the floating 6.5-inch Sync 3colour display, automatic headlamp activation and rain-sensing windscreen wipers, power windows all round, keyless starting, automatic climate control and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror,

Safety and security includes driver and passenger airbags, ABS brakes, remote central drive-away locking with a perimeter anti-theft alarm and engine immobiliser on Trend models, while Titanium adds side and curtain airbags and Ford’s smart MyKey that can inhibit incoming phone calls, restrict top speed, reduce volume or disable the audio system altogether if occupants are not using safety belts.

Figo Freestyle gets a Ford Protect four-year/120 000km warranty four-year/60 000km service plan at 15 000km intervals, three-year roadside assistance and a five-year corrosion warranty.
