Wild, wonderful and green at the Palexpo

Besides the headliners including Koenigsegg's Jesko, Ferrari's new F8, Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster, Pininfarina Battista, the Alfa Tonale, Fiat Centoventi, Renault Clio and Peugeot 3008, the Geneva show produced several other intriguing new models, concepts and attractions. These were some of them:

Aston Martin’s Vanquish Vision concept previews a 2022 mid-engined supercar codenamed AM9 and powered by a brand new Aston-designed twin-turbocharged V6 with a capacity of around 3-litres. Aston also previewed the Lagonda All-Terrain,  the second Lagonda concept after the Vision last year ’and also set to go into production in Wales in 2022.

Audi’s new Q4 E-tron is its fifth of 12 planned electric cars by 2025. Shorter and wider than a Q5 and more spacious too thanks to a 2.77-metre wheelbase and no transmission tunnel in a minimalist cabin. Powered by a synchronous electric motor at the rear axle backed by a smaller motor up front for 200kW and a 450km range, ETron is driven by an 82kWh underfloor battery that charge to 80% in half an hour at a maximum of 125kW rate.

Bentley reckons its Bentayga Speed is the world’s fastest SUV at just 0.8km’h faster than kissing cousin Lamborghini's Urus. 20kW up to 466kW at the same 900Nm, the biturbo W12 Bentayga Speed allegedly runs 306km/h, while 0-100km/h takes 3.9sec. 

Ginetta's new Akula has a bespoke, all-carbonfibre tub chassis and body sporting a compact new Ginetta-designed 90deg 420kW 750Nm V8 6-litre V8 with throttle bodies milled from billet aluminium and its own six-speed sequential paddle-shift gearbox. Weighing in a just 1150kg, Akula undercuts mid-engined rivals by up to 350kg.

A company said to be bringing Hispano Suiza back showed a 750kW 1690kg electric hyper luxury grand tourer named Carmen. Said to be good for 100km/h in under 3 seconds, the car suggesting its roots lie in ‘30s Suiza streamliners has a top end electronically limited to 250km/h.

Mazda’s new new CX-30 SUV sits between the CX-3 and CX-5 will come with all its petrol engines offered as mild-hybrids units featuring a motor driven by a 24V battery, while Mazda's Skyactiv-D diesel engine will serve on the turbodiesel front. All models get all-wheel drive balanced by a central torque distribution system and six-speed petrol and automatic gearboxes.

Mitsubishi’s Engelberg hybrid SUV concept suggests a new model with a normally aspirated 2.4-litre petrol four-pot mated to a 20kWh battery pack under the floor to power electric motors front and rear for an all-wheel drive solution with a 70km  range. A fully charged battery and full fuel tank will deliver 700km.

The new GLE 53 4Matic+ is the latest to gain Mercedes-AMG's new 320kW 500Nm biturbo 3-litre straight-six hybrid with an electric auxiliary compressor, an integrated starter motor and 48V electric system. 70kW and 250Nm up on the old GLE 43, its good for 0-100km/h in time of 5.3 seconds and 212g/km CO2.

A facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLC also broke cover with new engines including a 48V belt-driven starter motor assisted 2-litre four-pot mild hybrid with 150kW and 420Nm in tghe GLC250 and 190kW and 550Nm for the GLC300. Add new 120kW 350Nm GLC200d and 180kW 500Nm GLC300d 2-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesels all driving 9GTronic nine-speed torque converter autos and a new more dirt compatible 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Nissan previewed its next Qashqai with this IMq crossover concept that suggests electric propulsion in its volume segment. Boasting an evolution of Nissan’s ‘V-motion’ grille design in a minimalist design inside and out, the concept gets a 220kW dual-electric motor all-wheel-drive system delivering 700Nm an mated to a 1.5-litre turbo petrol range-extender to charge the battery without plugging in.
